Keep an eye out for some bagels popping up all over the place soon because a New York City favorite is planning a West Coast invasion.
PopUp Bagels, a popular bagel shop with spots in New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts, has announced that it will make its Golden State debut with 35 planned locations in Southern California opening within the next few years. The company expects to open 25 of the new bagel shops in Los Angles and Orange counties and 10 in San Diego County.
While there are no opening dates set yet, and no exact locations have been announced, a company official said the first couple of stores should open by the end of this year. But people can expect the shops, which typically span about 1,100 square feet, to pop up in areas with high foot traffic and busy neighborhoods, according to a press release.
PopUp Bagels, which started as a backyard pickup window during the pandemic in 2020, is known for focusing solely on bagels made in-house. They are served whole in varieties like plain, poppy, salt and sesame bagels. With a motto of “Grip, Rip and Dip,” they can be paired with house-made schmears (spreads) that come in unique flavors like Grillo’s Pickles Pickle de Gallo, Scallion Cream Cheese and Brown Sugar Cinnamon Butter.
The bagels earned the company back-to-back Best Overall, Expert’s Choice and Best Overall, People’s Choice awards at BagelFest in 2021-22.
