Orange County girls water polo Top 10: Newport Harbor at No. 1 after beating Mater Dei

ORANGE COUNTY GIRLS WATER POLO TOP 10

(Records through Thursday, Jan. 29.)

1. Newport Harbor (23-3): The Sunset League champion climbs one spot to No. 1 on the strength of an impressive win against Mater Dei in the finals of the Newport Invite. Emerson Mulvey scored a match-high four goals in a 12-6 triumph. Previous ranking: 2

2. Mater Dei (24-2): The Monarchs bounced back from a loss in the finals of the Newport Invite to beat JSerra 21-12 to claim the Trinity League title. Previous ranking: 1

3. Orange Lutheran (18-7): The Trinity League runner-up built momentum for the playoffs by capturing the Irvine Southern California Championships. Previous ranking: 3

4. Foothill (17-11): The Knights defeated Villa Park 17-1 on Tuesday to claim the Crestview League for their 20th consecutive league title. The streak started in 2007. Previous ranking: 4

5. JSerra (16-9): The Lions highlighted a runner-up finish at the Irvine SoCal tournament by rallying past Corona del Mar 11-8 in the semifinals. The Lions trailed 7-2 at half but erupted for nine unanswered goals. Sophomore Aubrey Cardoza netted four goals in the surge. Previous ranking: 6

6. San Clemente (19-8): The Tritons captured the South Coast League outright for a 10th consecutive title. Previous ranking: 5

7. Corona del Mar (17-8): The Sea Kings edged Beckman 7-6 for third place at the Irvine SoCal tournament. Previous ranking: 7

8. Beckman (14-11): Versatile attacker Natalie Arata has been one of Orange County’s most impressive freshman. Previous ranking: 8

9. Los Alamitos (13-14): The surging Griffins upset Laguna Beach 8-6 at the Irvine SoCal tournament and edged Huntington Beach 11-10 to take third in the Sunset League. Previous ranking: 10

10. Laguna Beach (17-11): Senior Brooke Schneider had a goal and four assists as the Breakers beat Woodbridge 18-6 to claim the Pacific Coast League title. Previous ranking: 9
