Orange County National Night Out events foster community, police relations

Neighborhoods where residents get out and meet each other and know their law enforcement are safer and discourage criminals —  that’s the thinking behind the National Night Out campaign.

At the beginning of each August, local law enforcement agencies across Orange County host events for residents, planning fun evenings where officers can connect with the community, share what they do and encourage vigilance.

Tuesday night, the Anaheim Police Department hosted community members at La Palma Park, giving demonstrations of the K-9 and motorcycle units, showcasing Angel, the department’s helicopter, and other vehicles and sharing safety tips and resources. There was also a donut-eating contest.

National Night Out events are traditionally hosted on the first Tuesday of the month, but some local agencies have events planned tonight, Aug. 7, including Huntington Beach from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Civic Center, 2000 Main St.; La Palma from 6 to 8 p.m. at Central Park, 7821 Walker St.; and Westminster from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Civic Center, 8200 Westminster Blvd.

Stanton will host its National Night Out event at 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 8, at Stanton Central Park, 10660 Western Ave., and Ladera Ranch from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 12 at Founders Park, 28275 Avendale Blvd.
