The Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange is making room at its Christ Cathedral for “The Shroud of Turin: An Immersive Experience” to come for a long visit.
The museum will need about 10,000 square feet of the Christ Cathedral’s Richard H. Pickup Cultural Center because the exhibit will feature a series of 360-degree theater rooms, interactive displays and other exhibits on “one of the world’s most studied artifacts,” believed to be the burial shroud of Jesus Christ, diocese officials said.
The Most Rev. Bishop Kevin Vann blessed the construction project for the museum on Monday, Sept. 8. The diocese showcased a few pieces and images from the upcoming exhibit and a newly commissioned, life-sized bronze statue of Christ, drawing from what he would look like based on studies of the shroud.
The museum will be ready for the public on Nov. 19, officials said. It is presented in conjunction with Rome-based Othonia, which is a consortium of experts on the shroud artifact.
“This will be Othonia’s flagship museum,” Nora Creech, director of North America for Othonia, said in a statement, “designed to introduce an entirely new audience to the shroud in an engaging and memorable way, and with the ultimate goal of making Jesus known through the shroud.”
