Special day reminds community to get students to school safely

Safe routes to school and healthy habits were promoted on Wednesday as students walked and rolled to their classrooms.

The Westminster School District, along with districts across the county, celebrated National Walk & Roll to School Day.

The events promote exercise, as well as safety and the importance of obeying traffic laws, for both students and drivers.

To help, the city of Westminster has created maps highlighting recommended walking and biking routes. The maps are available on the city and school district websites and were distributed in the schools.

Once at school, students at Johnson Middle School and Finley Elementary School, which sit side by side, were greeted by Westminster police officers, city officials, and an orange traffic cone character.

The two schools serve more than 800 students.
