Taco Nazo, ‘pioneers of the fish taco,’ to open new Orange County spot

For nearly 50 years, the search for the definitive Ensenada-style fish taco often required a pilgrimage across county lines. But for the battered-fish fans, the commute is about to get shorter.

Taco Nazo, which bills itself the “pioneers of the fish taco,” has announced plans to open its first restaurant in Santa Ana. According to the eatery’s social media channels, the new spot, which will offer sit-down and drive-through options, will debut in Santa Ana at 1766 E. McFadden Ave., taking over the space formerly occupied by Miguel’s Jr.

While the expansion brings a fresh taco option to the area, Taco Nazo’s story is the stuff of legend. Its story dates back to 1978 when the late Gilberto and Maria Romero launched a modest food truck. Equipped with family recipes, the couple found success, which later translated to opening several Los Angeles locations. While the origins of the fish taco are rooted in Baja, the duo helped set the template for what we now recognize as the classic fish taco: a harmonious blend of hot, crispy fish or shrimp, cool cabbage, onions, tomatoes and crema. Other menu items include an asada taco, a fish burrito, campechana, a chicken torta, Mexican sodas, rice, beans and more.

The formula garnered a following and critical worship over the last 45 years. The late Los Angeles Times critic Jonathan Gold named the shop’s tacos among the best in a 2013 column. And its original La Puente location has become an unofficial cultural landmark.

While Taco Nazo has footprints in the San Gabriel Valley and Southeast Los Angeles, with locations in Bellflower, El Monte, Walnut and the original La Puente, its presence in Orange County has been limited to La Habra. The move deeper into Orange County, specifically Santa Ana, signals a broader shift for the brand.

Jesse Romero, owner of the new location and son of Gilberto and Maria, said the Santa Ana Taco Nazo is slated to open by the end of December.
