Trader Joe’s confirms Costa Mesa store debuts Thursday

Trader Joe’s will open the doors of its second grocery store in Costa Mesa on Thursday, Dec. 11.

On Tuesday, the Monrovia grocery chain confirmed the opening day, indicating Store 290 at 2170 Harbor Blvd. — where it meets and Victoria Street — will open at 9 a.m. The company will host a short ribbon-cutting in the minutes before with store “captain” Christopher Kelly and his “crew.”

The 9,541-square-foot Trader Joe’s claimed part of a shuttered 99 Cents Only Store.

The company said in addition to new store hires, it also transferred employees from the 640 W. 17th St. location.

The latest store opening is part of an ongoing expansion for the quirky grocer, which features a lot of store-branded merchandise that’s so popular there’s even a fan favorite list released yearly.

Founded by Joe Coulombe, Trader Joe’s got its start in Pasadena in 1967 and today operates 615 stores in 42 states and Washington, D.C.
