US Open of Surfing called off for the day because of inconsistent and small surf

The US Open of Surfing was called off for today, July 30, not because of tsunami impacts but due to inconsistent and small surf, according to event organizers.

The festival area and activities remain open.

Organizers said they will reassess conditions on Thursday to resume the event.

“We’ve made the decision to call the event off for today,” Travis Logie, World Surf League tour manager,  said in an announcement. “We went on hold for a couple of hours to see if it would improve, and the conditions actually worsened. It’s borderline unsurfable today due to the lack of swell.

“There are not many signs that it will improve at all today, so we’re calling it off for the day, hoping for better conditions tomorrow,” he added. “On the forecast, it says there is a slight improvement in swell size, so we’re being optimistic and hoping to come back tomorrow and get some heats going.”

Huntington Beach officials sent out an announcement in the morning reopening the beach area following the tsunami alert .
