Detectives seek tips on South Whittier shooting that killed 19-year-old

Investigators are asking the public for any information about a suspected gang-related shooting that left a 19-year-old Whittier man dead in the unincorporated community of South Whittier.

The shooting happened on the 10000 block of Mills Avenue around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 20.

“There were people around,” sheriff’s Lt. Steven De Jong said.

The three victims, Adrian Coreno and two 17-year-old boys, were walking northbound on Mills Avenue when someone in a passing car started shooting, De Jong said.

Detectives believe the shooter was in the passenger side, he said.

The vehicle was last seen heading south on Mills Avenue. Investigators don’t yet know how many people were in the car.

Deputies who went to a call of a gunshot victim found Coreno and treated him until firefighters arrived. Coreno died at the scene from a gunshot wound to the torso, according to the medical examiner’s office.

The two other victims weren’t injured in the shooting, sheriff’s officials said.

Coreno’s family couldn’t be reached for comment on Tuesday.

Anyone with information about the shooting is encouraged to call the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500. Anonymous tipsters can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or go to lacrimestoppers.org
