Fountain Valley mourns Fire Chief Bill McQuaid

Fountain Valley officials were in mourning Saturday after the unexpected off-duty death of Fire Chief Bill McQuaid.

McQuaid died Friday afternoon, according to a city statement. The cause of his death was not released.

“Chief McQuaid was more than a leader,” the city’s statement said. “He was a mentor, a friend, and a steadfast pillar of strength within our department and community.”

McQuaid is survived by wife Tracy, daughters Allyson (Ally) and Julie, mother Judy, sister Tracy and brother-in-law Keith and their children.

McQuaid joined the department in 1996, and was named chief in January 2023.

“Chief McQuaid dedicated his life to service, leading with compassion, integrity, and unwavering commitment,” the city said. “His loss is felt deeply across our department and throughout the city he served so faithfully.

“We are grateful for the legacy he leaves behind and will continue to honor his memory in all that we do. Rest easy, Chief. We’ve got it from here.”
