2 hospitalized in shooting at Inglewood college campus

A suspect is in custody after two people were hospitalized after being struck by gunfire at an Inglewood college campus Friday night.

Police responded to the Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology on Aviation Boulevard shortly before 4 p.m.

Sky5 footage showed officers surrounding a building where the male suspect was reportedly barricaded inside before he fled the campus.

Authorities later confirmed he was a Hispanic man who was a former employee of the college. He was allegedly wearing an outfit that resembled a security uniform, according to Inglewood Mayor James T. Butts.

Two female victims, who were employees of the college, were transported to a local trauma center in critical condition.

Officers conducted a room-to-room search of the premises, where no additional victims were found. Police set up a perimeter as they searched for the suspect, who was later found around 6 p.m.

Sky5 footage showed LAPD officers surrounding a dark-colored BMW sedan on the 1100 block of Berendo Street in the Pico-Union neighborhood.

The car reportedly had a license plate that matched a description of the suspect’s vehicle. The man was removed from the car and taken into custody.

A woman at the scene told KTLA that her boyfriend, who works at the college’s admissions office, had reportedly spoken to the suspect shortly before the shooting occurred.

“He told me that 30 minutes prior, he had talked to the [suspect], he thanked him for something,” she said. “It happened in the front desk area. He was getting ready to step out into the hallway when he heard the gunshots. He got startled. He was very shaken up.”
