Chipotle Mexican Grill launches family meals; here’s what you get

Chipotle Mexican Grill has launched family meals for four to six people.

The meal is called Build Your Own Chipotle and it’s available online and through the chain’s app.

Each order includes a choice of protein; choice of white or brown rice; choice of black beans or pinto beans; one premium side, either guacamole or Queso Blanco; cheese; romaine lettuce; eight flour tortillas; two large orders of chips; a large portion of sour cream; and choice of three salsas.

Prices vary by location. Spot-checking Southern California restaurants online, we found $59-$63 plus tax for chicken or Sofritas, the chain’s non-meat protein option, and $70-$74 for steak or barbacoa.

Customers are limited to one order at a time.

To promote the new item, Chipotle is offering $10 off your first “Build-Your-Own Chipotle” order with code TRYBYOC through Oct.  21 or until there are 500,000 total redemptions.

The price appears to be a bargain for six servings.

To find out, we created online orders for a chicken burrito and a chicken bowl with guacamole and a regular side of tortilla chips. The total came to $14.40 each at a lower priced restaurant, which multiplied by four came to $57.60. Multiplied by six, it came to $86.40.

At a higher priced restaurant, the total came to $15.30 each, which multiplied by four came to $61.20. Multiplied by six, it came to $91.80.

Changing the guacamole to Queso Blanco lowered the price of a burrito or bowl by $1.15.

Changing the chicken to steak raised the price by $1.75.

Family meals aren’t the only thing that’s new at Chipotle. The chain recently launched Chipotle U, a loyalty program aimed at college students.
