Oil spill in Newport Harbor is under investigation

Authorities on Sunday, Aug. 3, were investigating an oil spill in Newport Harbor that was traced to a 40-foot boat.

Orange County Sheriff’s Lt. David Murphy said there were reports of an odor coming from the harbor on Saturday night, and then on Sunday, a sheen could be seen on the ocean’s surface. A sheriff’s helicopter tracked the oily trail to a boat, Murphy said.

The extent of any environmental impact was not immediately clear. All beaches in the area appeared to be open on Sunday, according to the website ocbeachinfo.com.
